German Author Karin Gündisch
Visiting Freedom High School, October 9, 2006
Karin Gündisch is currently touring the United States for three weeks. Highlights of her visit include lectures at New York University, New York, Appalachian State University, Boone, Freedom High School, Morganton, German School, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Princeton University, New Jersey.
Her award winning books deal with the fate of immigrants and emigrants from Transylvania to Germany to America. One of her novels, How I became an American has been published in the U.S.; a copy is located in the FHS library.
During her visit to Freedom High School, she met with Advanced German students, watched their presentation on the background of her novel, and presented her works. Mrs. Gündisch, a former German teacher and textbook publisher in Romania also experienced a Beginning German class with Joachim Koerner, German Teacher at Freedom High School. Later, she was also introduced to members of the Freedom Faculty, as well as to Principal, Mr. Brian Oliver, and Superintendent, Mr. David Burleson.
Mrs. Gündisch completed her tour of Morganton with visits of Forest Hill Elementary School, and Walter Johnson Middle School, where she was able to speak with 8th grade AG students. She was very impressed with the students questions and contributions, and invited them to read from her novel.
Mr. Koerner and Ms. Kathrin Gierscher, German Research Assistant at Freedom High School, accompanied Mrs. Gündisch to Boone with a brief tour of the Blue Ridge Parkway in beautiful fall colors.
